ended up doing something not in the equation.... pulled up the local nickel adds on the computer this afternoon and found a 1970 custom listed for $500. Immediately called the owner, a middle aged guy whose father used to own it. it's a custom with a 292 straight 6 and a 4spd. I looked it over top to bottom and found only a little surface rust under the truck, nothing on the rockers or cab corners. It needs a new gas tank (rust clogs the inline fuel filter), the passenger door window doesn't work, and a few dents and dings here and there. the glove box said it had "medium red" paint which is now badly oxidized, and a white cab. I purchased it for $400. I'll post pictures this weekend.
