With a deal like that I usually add up what the parts are worth to come up with a value, and if it's complete, and in decent shape, it's probably worth that much in parts. I don't think that getting a title would be that big a deal though, as long as it's not stolen, and has been sitting for years. Just get a bill of sale from him and take it to a title company.
