That is the most unbelievable thing I have ever seen, when it comes to damage to a package. I can't believe the postal service worker that dropped it off, had the balls to leave it at your door step.
Insurance with the USPS is a joke. I have tried to file a claim for a few incidents, very minor compared to yours, to no avail. It was a waste of my time and a waste of my money to insure it. Their denial was base on improper packaging, but you have to unpack the item to see and inspect it, so the original packaging is not intact, so there is no way they can make that determination. It is their safety net/catch-all way of not having to pay claims.
I would appeal this situation to the US Post Master General. The USPS had better get on top of their game or they are going to be eliminated, in favor of free-enterprise, like UPS, FedEx, etc.
Sorry for the novel, but I am furious after looking at the photos.
