I'm no engineer, but It seems to me that a thicker rotor can take more heat w/o warping. If they did a 100% change in 81 I would think it was to either save money by buy less steel or because better material was available. Remember that one of the reasons new vehicles have thin panels is so car companies can save money, but the price of cars goes up every year??
