[71 super]

Mine was definitely a dealer installed unit, and it was done in 72 not 71 when the truck was new, the original owner did not remember when but he stated that he had it put on after he bought the truck... for what that is worth. By 71 they were definitely dealer add ons as I think 69 or 70 was the last year available as an option. As I have understood it they were having problems with them and people weren't buying them so they discontinued the option and moved it to accessories. This falls into 8 track realm as there are least 2 different 8 tracks that were available through the dealer and both a correct. I would think that then as now as parts availability dictated that was what was passed across the counter, as it all served the same purpose and was hooked up the same. The set up that Eric has I have seen on later g series vans as well, but the diaphram bracket is different. After looking at the bracket in Erics post again, it looks like the bracket that is on my unit. The unit that Roger has listed for sale I believe is the generally accepted unit for our trucks, with the type Trevor, OHone and I have were prob. units added later on -as in late 72. Anything and everything can and does happen at a dealership, when I was working in one while in college a salesman sold a z71 but ordered a regular 4x4, the new owner came in and pitched a fit (rightfully so) and three days later he had a z71- built from the parts room and order desk. Same truck with added skid plates, stickers etc. that came with the z71 designation. If it happens now, it happened then. Forty years from now someone is going to flip out trying to figure out the deal on that truck (if it has not rusted to the ground or crushed as a clunker).
