220 works well. The last couple of coats I use a 320. Tack well between coats and use a real bristle brush with real varnish. bristle brushes are expensive compared to man made and you don't let them dry out - they are hung in thinner. Dust is your enemy in varnishing as it takes awhile to "set". Any dust in the air will find its way to varnished wood.
