As strange as it might seem, some folk actually use these trucks occasionally as a TRUCK!
I like the 'glass tip-up tonneaus esthetically, but when I decide to haul something that sits above the bed sides, I don't want to deal with trying to remove the top by myself without scratching something, finding a safe place to store it, then trying to reinstall it by myself without, again, screwing something up. Flexibility ... that's the key word IMHO.
