You may be on the right track. Have you tried the old screwdriver across the solonoid to isolate the problem to wiring?
Also, there is a chance that there was is some confusion on wire placement on the solonoid contacts. I did it once.
Other possibilities are the key switch, and possibly the nuetral switch. Do any key-on accesories work when you turn the key on?
