If you have a jack and two jack stands ( to be safe)
Jack one side of the truck at a time:
get the jack as close to the lower ball joint as you can. Once the wheel is off the ground, take a long pry bar, and raise and lower the tire at the 6 oclock position. Have someone looking for loose play in the upper and lower ball joints. Then take your hands and grab the tire at the 3 and 9 o clock position and have someone look for loose play in the steering linkage. if something is loose, then fix it.
IF the steering box is worn out, you should be able to turn the steering wheel, and see the steering shaft move all the way to the top of the steering box. Then you will see no movement at the bottom of the steering box.
Adding power steering to our truck is pretty simple. go to the local parts store and buy a reman power steering box $200-$250. then it gets a bit hard. you will need a P/S pump,pulleys,hoses, and some fluid. I will tell you that you will be glad you did this !!
