hmm 3" isn't too bad, and I'd think you wouldn't want to have a completely snug steering with a manual box. Since if you hit a curb, or rock it could jolt your steering wheel abruptly enough to hurt your hand.

So...
As far as getting a new rebuilt steering gear, just about every one of the resto parts vendors carry those. So pick yer poison.
