I just went through the same thing considering a 1/2 ton over a 3/4 ton..... I'm towing a 27 foot camper.

This is what it boiled down to for me.
By the time I got The 1/2 ton LT model with the tow package and the integrated trailer brake with the Z71 offroad package and the right gears and same trim package, I was less than 1700.00 from the 3/4 ton.........
The 2500 has the bigger engine, tow package, suspension, braking, same trim.......... It was a no brainer in the end.

GET THE 2500HD if you are towing. GET the 1500 if you are not.

Sure, you will lose a few MPG's under daily driving, but for the small price difference and bigger sense of security when towing it was a better deal for me.
