On 1/2 tons, the u-joint yoke has to come off the rear of the front drive shaft, which means, yeah, the drive shaft has to come out. maybe 3/4 ton is different? be prepared to drip a little tranny fluid when you pull the shaft. its been a while since I've done but its looking like I need to do it again.
