The original location would have been in a mounting bracket that attaches to the intake manifold behind the carburetor. This would solve your "visibility" issue and get it mounted more vertically.....but I have never heard of this "vertical mounting" having anything to do with overheating the coil? As stated, the original location was on the manifold, which would get hotter than the firewall, so I'm not seeing the benefit of moving it? other than purely cosmetic, which is a perfectly good reason....
