The engine would be a 347 Pontiac if it is original. I have owned a bunch of 50s and 60s Pontiacs and was very satisfied with them. I don't know how the GMC version differs from Pontiac car engines. One guess would be lower compression or a milder cam.
If the truck is rare, it is because it is a GMC, not because it is a V-8. I don't think V-8 GMCs are proportionately any scarcer than V-8 Chevys. IMO, a truly stock unmolested Chevy with no rust would be worth $2K, so the GMC price doesn't seem out of line.
What transmission does it have? If it is a Hydra-matic, you know it is hard to find people who can work on them.
