I recently converted my shortbed stepside to a fleetside, and i had the same problem the first time i put gas in it w/the fleet bed, the rubber hose on the vent tube was completely pinched closed. I messed with it a little to make the vent line right and i can now fill my tank from empty in about 2-3 minutes. Mine is a 76 though so it doesn't have a check ball...
