I've been seeing my best with about a 1/2" sticking out, my most difficulty was the keeping a consistant tilt-back.
The X members are channel and cannot access the underside. I may just rivet those as suggested. I have a nice H/D hydraulic riveter I've never used, here's a good opportunity!
Thanks for the tips and ideas.

One thing that I notice if I tilt-back on the gun more than 10 degrees is that I'll get alot of splatter shooting out in front of my weld. You will most likely get splatter at the start of the weld but the splatter should stop or be minimal. You can hold the gun less than 10 degrees or even straight on but that may make it difficult seeing depending on your position.
Also before you weld you should do a "dry" run. Be as comfortable as possible and go through the motions with your arms. It will help you position your body and arms.
