I can't exactly explain,but the GM parts book lists them as 1st and 2nd design and the number stamped in the axle is what you go by.I had to replace one on my '72 when a lock-out went way south on me.Years ago,when these were available,I replaced one on a '71 because the threads were a bit damaged.I still hung onto the old one and fortunately my '72 was 1st design.You can't find a thread file or die for the oddball pitch GM used,but I managed to dress them with jeweler files and am now running it.I imagine the difference is in the bearing surfaces/dimensions.If I had one off to compare I could help.Maybe another member could help.
