GENIII/TH400 Guys Come In

I am swapping a LQ9 in my m1009 and I am going to keep the TH400. The way I understand it is I need the spacer for the hub of the converter to sit in and it goes between the flexplate and the converter? I assume there will be a gap between were the converter and flexplate bolt together? Do you use washers to take up that space? I called Hughes today to see what converter they recommend and he tried to tell me I would need their flexplate and spacer to make it work. Heck the flexplate and spacer is $200 plus the $297 for the converter. I would like to keep the cost down and use the stock flexplate. Thanks for any advice!!
