You can get rid of them. Some people cut only the bumpstop support and leave the steering stop; I drilled all the spotwelds and gave it a wack with the hammer/chisel and they popped right off.

You can relocate the bumpstop to the coil spring pocket, right on the corner, if you still want to run one.
