I am a little confused, but that is kind of normal by your description. The original oil pressure gage does not have a sending unit, just hooked to a fitting on the back of the intake by the distributor on a 350 with copper tubing. 454 and L6s are different.

The light is hooked up to the dash light wires for night driving and so it can be dimmed if the dash lights are.
