You can light up the tires just fine with that three speed if you don't mind driving the three speed. Car style Muncie 4 speeds are about like gold right now price wise.
You might also look into a Camaro/Firebird V8 5 speed. That would give you an overdrive ratio for running on the highway.
I'd pass on the powerglide idea unless it was a drag only rig with a specially built trans but they leave a lot to be desired on the street. A well built turbo 350 will handle most small blocks on the street if you want to go automatic or a good 700R4 to get the overdrive 4th gear.
