Keep doing what you're doing.
I hit them from the front a little @ a time. After each hit I rotate the differential making sure it clears (you don't want to knock it so far that you can't rotate the differential). Once it's as far as it can be pushed in w/o interfereing while rotating, rotate the differential 180° & use some channel locks or vice grips to pull it toward you the rest of the way through.
Try, try, try, to not damage the outside edges of the pin if you plan to re-use it.
