Welcome to the forum powerplant_chevy. I always suggest buying as much truck as you can afford. There are lots of things that someone with mechanical skills like your self can do, and there are those that are best left to a professional. Paint and body work are usually high on that list..
Focus on finding a truck that has paint you can live with. As suggested, spend some time in or Suspension Forum for a LOT of valuable information.
