Some people just have no mechanical aptitude or understanding. They just see it as a waste of time and money but don't realize other people enjoy these things and it's a hobby to them. Does your dad have a hobby? Try to explain to them that they have their hobbies that I'm sure cost money and this is yours and it's no different. Sounds like your dad is like my girlfriend's dad when it comes to cars. He'll drive a new car for a year, put about 30,000 miles on it and then trade it in because it needs new tires. I just laugh to myself everytime I see him pull up in another new car.
