To each his own, they all have their place. Sometimes those little fellers wind tight and let 'er rip - in the right application a high revving horsepower type engine will take a torquey big block. But when it's torque that you need, cubes are where it's found.
I sure wouldn't give a kid a 800hp engine, a well built stroker would be ideal, though. We built one for my son's first truck, he has it in his second truck now. Plenty of power for a heavy truck but not a hotrod. It's amazing how well he treats this engine since he built it, he drives a lot like his old fart dad!
