Maybe that's why, I have seen stuff like that happen where parts from different years have gotten blended when it's close to the change over at some plants.
For example, My 1980 C25 with 20,000 miles was built in October of 79' and has some mechanical items that GM told me were ended in the 79' model and changed in the 80' model.
One small item was the fuel lines and fuel pump ( the shape, and direction they face ) was changed in the 80' model. My Truck has the 79' fuel line and pump setup.

Very possible, but I do not know how to find out. The only thing I got from the vin was that it is a GMC, 2wd, 350 motor, 1/2 ton heavy duty, pickup, 79, from Janesville and the last numbers are 512145.
