start with any whitewall tire or tire with raised white letters, get yourself a 40 grit flapper wheel, and start grinding. I started on the existing whitewall and worked toward the tread until I found the edge of the white rubber and then just follow that line around the hole tire. you can work both ways from the white stripe, both toward the tread and toward the wheel, I only went from the whitewall out, the inside line is the original inside line from when it was a skinny whitewall. you can probably search "make your own wide whitewall" or something like that on youtube and find a video showing you how.
so I've been driving my rust bucket as a daily driver for quite awhile now so haven't really done anything to it since last summer, butttt......I'm going to finish the few things I have left to do to get my '55 Pontiac going and then start driving it and the truck is going in the garage to go under the knife. at least for now the plan is to pull the motor, trans, and the whole body and make a bunch of changes to the frame. once I'm done with that I'll look for a donor truck for body panels with a bit fewer rust holes. for you local guys, I might have my truck around for the very beginning of summer but idealy it will be down by the time the shows start and I'll be rolling my Poncho for the summer. so, get ready for the thread to be a lot more active once I get started on the trucks transformation.
