Yes, the 230-250 will turn more rpms than the long stroke 292.
And you are on the right path with intake lumps, 1.94 intakes/1.6 exhaust, mild cam, Offy intake, 400-500 cfm carb, headers, and HEI.
Tom Lowe did a lot of dyno testing last year on the 250 and 292. go to inliners.org and contact him, he will supply the results for a small donation to the effort.
I built my 292 using those dyno tests.
