Andy,

The way the trans. shifts is when you are driving normally at all speeds, you put the indicator in the 1-4 position (trans will work through all gears). If under load (about a 1/4 ton), you’d use a lower gear 1-3 (shifts from 1st. -3rd. gear only). If under (full load 1/2 ton) you'd used 1-2. When you park, you place the trans. in natural kill the engine and then shift down to R, a cam will drop into the teeth of the trans and serve as the parking cam.

When I first got my truck it took me a bit to get used to and because the trans was adjusted wrong, it would bark the tires in 2nd. Gear. Scarred the hell out of me and (others I'm sure) at a stop light a few times.
