In a nutshell....
...find compression stroke TDC of cyl #1.
...insert dizzy and rotor. End of dizzy has a slot to connect w/the oil pump.
...where rotor is pointing to on the cap is #1.
It makes no difference if the rotor is pointing front, back or sideways, that is #1.
...install cap, add remaining plugs. If the engine is a sbc/bbc, firing order is 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2
