If the system hasn't been open and it is just a compressor issue you could probably fix it but it might get costly. The compressor is not the major expense the shop that is certified to do the work is the expense. I got the Old Air unit because that way it is designed to run R-134A which I can buy over the counter. That way I can do my A/C work. I could get the certificate to buy R-12 but it still runs like $30 a can and R-134A is $5-6 a can or a 30# can for $129.
