The 2 barrel carb is a large part of your problem. 4 barrel carbs run around on the much smaller primaries in most cases allowing for better fuel economy. @ barrels have only primaries so they have to be large enough to feed the engine at all rpms. I would look into a 4 barrel intake a 600cfm carb as the first upgrade. I would also be very curious about what the rear gear ratio is. A lot of these older trucks had a low gear in them. Stock ignition is another unknown. Stock for that truck would be point ignition. The cheapest best upgrade would be to an hei distributor and do a full tune up in the new process. New plugs wires etc.
