If you're just pulling the shift stick.. you only have to press down and turn the cap about 45 degrees clockwise -- I think -- using tool J-@#$% [I made one by cutting a 5/8" slot in a short piece of 2x4 wood] ..then the stick should lift right up. There is a half-ball and spring underneath that come out too.
If you're pulling the turret plate (top) off the tranny ... then you need to be almost in Reverse to get it off. The top plate has to come off only if you are pulling the engine and trans as a one-piece unit.
