One thing I could never understand though, is why GM put a 200 in the heavy Monte SS and S10 with 4.3 got a 700.

That's a great question Str8, I've often wondered the same. The 700R4 always got more press, but one thing most folks forget is that the Buick GNX actually had a 2004R and that was one of most powerful cars in the late 80's - sadly, it ran circles around the camaros and trans ams (and my little monte carlo...) and I "THINK" it even beat the vette in the quarter that year, the last year for the grand national (I think 87 was the last year, but at the very least, it was "the" year for the GNX). Cool car - I'm dyed in the wool chebby, but pretty hot street car back, in the day.

So, the 2004R is capable of handling some hp, especially if modified even a little bit. I think the 700R4s always got more press because they were more plentiful - but I agree, always thought it was odd that the 2004R was in the monte and GNs in the day. For that matter - I never understood why they had 2 separate transmissions - as much as everything was consolidating at GM back then, why not just ONE O/D automatic and make it beefy enough to handle whatever was needed? Guess that's why I'm not the CEO. The good news is it just gives us one more choice nowadays.
