Your carb could be partially plugged up internally. Did you check for any vacuum leaks. I had a problem with my edelbrock that idled high and when you put it in gear it would almost stall, and sometimes die when coasting to a stop sign. I had to rebuild the carb, and adjust the timing and fix a vaccum leak. It runs like a champ now. Good luck.
