cutting the flanges will allow you to get the bolts started easier and the bolts will stay tight. If you bolts are tight theres less chance of burning gaskets out. I have never burnt a gasket or had a leak, loose bolts, since I started doing this almost 10 years ago. I dont even bother to check the bolts anymore.
