The reason you can get lucky sometimes is the direction of rotation.. since you come in from behind the fan it pushes your finger out of the way with the slant... if you got in front of it it'd pull your finger in/ chop it off. You have to stick your finger in a lot farther from behind to get the sharp edge instead of slant, and it moves so fast it's hard to get it in that far before it gets pushed out... fortunately....
When I set the timing on the IH, I'm always paranoid about the belts and all being so close to my hands... that's one time when I'm glad the dizzy is in the back on the chevy... well I guess it's the only time, but anyways...
