new starter question: shims

So I figured out that my starter was definitely fried. I also found out that the wire to the starter had been cut and the previous owner has spliced in some pretty light guage wire. As a result, it tended to start hard once the wire heated up. So I bought a new starter today. It came with a set of shims. The shims are about four inches long. The directions show them spanning diagonally across the two holes in the starter. However, the Chevy manual shows two separate shims at two separte thicknesses. My question is what is the proper way and number of shims to include? The truck is an 86 K10.
Oh by the way, the old starter didn't have any shims in it. But I think that it probably should have. Let me know if I am wrong

Thanks for all of your help guys. I really do appreciate it.
