We do a two step method on the cables. The cables are set up in a vise so that the cable end is up. Using Aero Kroil, we spray the cable with liberal amounts of fluid. It may take days but eventually the penetrant works its way down through and comes out at the other end. The cable core is worked periodically. Once this phase is done, we soak the cable with lubricating oil, working it down into the cable. Prior to installation, we use a grease on both ends, working the cable to pull the grease in.
Being in Michigan, the cables are somewhat rusty and it takes a lot to make them work freely. They seem to hold up after this for years as we have not had a sticky cable.
