However, with a stock cast iron crank and stock rods, it is a good idea to keep it below 5500 RPM most of the time.
I've wrapped mine out to almost 7 grand once, but I was scared as h*ll when I saw that tach needle up there.
They'll hold up if you rev them like that once in a while, but I would never want to hold it over 5500 for more than a second or two.
5500 is the stock redline on pretty much all old school non-performance chevy small blocks.
