I went to the local Pull a part and got a factory HEI from a 76 up truck.There's a great install write up by member "shifty" in the FAQ's.The gathering of parts took way longer than the 45 or so install.That's from hood up to pulling out of the drive.Runs smoother,starts and idles better and has more pwoer through the whole rpm range.No way would I skip this.Even on a stock restore I would do pertronix.
I rebuilt my carb and helped it even more.I doubt there's a better choice of carb unless you replace intake also.That usually means a header swap also.It can get pricey.I have the intake but haven't found a deal on headers or a carb yet.This is just my opinion and experience and I used the sop dyno to quantify my results.
