a 307 is same crank and cam as a 327 so yes a nice start.
a 327 makes sense in a lightweight drag car. but it's little brother, the short stroke 307 is tuned to act like a low rpm engine in this application. better than the 265 and 283, but still not well suited to a heavy truck. the engine is fighting itself.

would rather have a 305 (same crank as the 350) in my 72 burb c20 instead of the 307. but the motor is original, runs great now that the 2bbl is bye bye and a q-jet is in it's place. when the day comes that the motor needs a freshening, it is getting a 400sbc stroker kit and full roller RV grind valve train for REAL towing power.

certainly an interesting, unique project, but it would have been much easier to swap a 350tbi engine in and gain performance as well as efficiency. plus, the old engine doesn't have all the sensor ports needed for fuel injection and then there is the tuning issue as there never was a 307tbi calibration from GM. good luck!
