if you remove the speedo drive you will find a seal (or o-rings) just under the gear and in good condition shouldn't leak without the cable installed, i have used the old muncie 4 speeds for years in my race cars without speedo cables and they never leaked but i did have one in a 70 chevelle ss that leaked and pulled oil all the way up to the speedo head and dripped on my feet lol
