Yes very much trial and error. I wanted it as dark as i could get it and we tried different color silvers and black and settled on really dark grey. Black base barely shows any red and the lighter silvers were bright red. Hope this helps basically the base color changes the hue of the candy since the candy is basically a clear tint. Im not very much of a paint person myself just knew what color i was going for. Thats the most of the battle.
