The big reason for changing lug nuts on newer wheels are that the old trucks have SAE threads on them, newer trucks have metric lug nuts. If you want to use the original center cap that came with the newer wheel you can buy specialised lug nuts from different vendors as mentioned above.
I am actually going to use Ford F-350 Alcoa aluminum wheels on my 72 with Chevy center caps from a set of steel wheels.
