I have this exact same issue with a set of McGaughy's drop spindles. I had to buy a second set of spindles to replace the one I messed up. McGaughy does a very sloppy tap for the caliper bolts, when I got my second set in I used a thread chaser to make sure all the burrs and debris was cleaned out so I wouldn't mess up another spindle. I'm going to go to a machine shop to see if I can salvage the one I damaged.
