Coming from someone that has gone from 15.5 to 18.5 wide tires, you really need to make sure the wheels, but more importantly, the tires will clear. You need to know the cross section of the tire which is the widest part of the tire buldge. You can't go by tread width listed. The tire is widest at the center of the buldging sidewall and that is the part that will rub if too big.....not the wheels. I will tell you that if you have a coil rear, the inner wheel well is all you have to worry about. If it's a spring pack, I'm not sure if the springs become a problem before the wells will.
