In looking at the wiring diagrams the only difference might be in the backup neutral safety switch. It's been many year since I converted my 69 to automatic by acquiring an automatic column but I don't remember having to rewire for the neutral safety switch so it may already be there on you standard column.

Personally I'd try to find an automatic column if you are going to go with the column shift. I see them on Craigs sometimes and you may want to look at the parts for sale site or post a want to buy.
