Not sure about different starter nose lengths...but I do know the starter is suppose to extend to contact flexplate then retract after start up, if this isn't working properly then that can be ur problem. If u still can't get one to work I personally would run the 350 block numbers and find out wat the block was originally in and get the correct starter. Far as I know though a sbc starter works on all early sbc's.....
