Frankie, I've got a smaller torpedo heater that runs on kerosene or stove oil and it does leave an odor no matter which one you run it on. I use mine in a tent carport thing or aim it in the door of my old one car garage but I wouldn't want one in closed up building.

I used a bunch of the bigger Propane ones from Grainger in a big food processing plant/warehouse to keep things from freezing. I think we had at least ten of them going at one time in the whole operation. They used propane like it was going out of style though.
